Introduction

Burgoo’s primary objective in this video project was to dispel harmful stereotypes surrounding teenagers and drive interest and support to the incredible work being done by the volunteers and teens at the Avenue A after-school programs in Antrim, NH. The message was strong: Avenue A exists to help forge healthy relationships between teens, their communities, and each other.

Broadcasting this message to the community was important—Avenue A is an organization that offers enrichment and leadership programs free of cost, and relies on the support of over 60 local volunteers to make it happen.

Our Approach

The best way to combat a negative stereotype is to get personal. We wanted to hear from the teens themselves about their experiences, and let them use their own stories to show how the support system they found at Avenue A impacted each of their lives in meaningful ways.

We didn’t just want to interview the teens—we wanted them involved in the process. We got to know them, and let their unique talents drive the story forward. From Japanese Manga illustrations to taekwondo to songwriting, their diverse passions shaped the project.

Rolling Out the Message

With the video complete, we thought an in-person event showcasing the teens would offer a perfect opportunity for them to interact with the broader community. We planned a red carpet premiere party for the video, where the teens were encouraged to dress in their coolest fit and treated like movie stars—with Burgoo’s own photographer, Anthony Riso, acting as paparazzi.

The video premiered to a sold-out theater packed with community and family members. At Burgoo, we don’t just create content—we consider the humanity of the subjects whose stories we tell, and consider impact on every scale. We were able to broadcast Avenue A’s message to the community while following their own mission of inspiring and supporting rural teens.
